The town of Berwick upon Tweed is surrounded by Elizabethan splendour. Fantastic fortifications encompass the town offering marvellous views to the sea. Constructed over 400 years ago and maintained by English Heritage these fortifications are an historical treasure to Northumberland. Many of Berwick upon Tweed's buildings are Grade 2 listed and are important for the town's heritage. Berwick Barracks that once accommodated the KOSB's has a fascinating history to tell along side the museum. Berwick upon Tweed was a garrison town and many a battle was fought here between the Scots and the English and it is said to have changed hands 13 times.

Only a 2 minute walk away from the Granary Guest House flows the river Tweed. Many hours can be spent strolling along its banks admiring nature at its best, over 600 swans in a season can visit here, attracted by the abundance of vegetation. Berwick upon Tweed is also famous for its bridges especially the Royal Border designed by Robert Stephenson 150 years ago and to this day is still providing a working link between England and Scotland carrying the main East coast railway line.
